Shalom and Welcome to Metulla
Metulla is a small town located between sites of the Biblical cities of Dan,
Abel Bet Maacah, and Ijon, in Northern Israel.
Baron Edmond de Rothschild founded Metulla in 1896
Rothschild purchased the land from Druze owners.
Then he helped immigrants from Russia to settle the land.
Many of the immigrants were fleeing pogroms - riots against Jewish people -
that were taking place during that period in Russia.
Other pioneers ("chalutzim") from Petach Tikva (near Tel Aviv of today)
joined in settling Metulla. Some Talmudic scholars from Safed also joined them.
Half a century later, Holocaust survivors would also participate in settling Metulla.
In the course of the years Metulla has experienced many hardships.
But the determination of its residents brought forth a flourishing garden,
out of barren waste-land. Their perseverance has turned it into an enchanting place.
Metulla's setting makes it an ideal, and natural place to spend your vacation.
Looking to the East, one sees Mt. Hermon, dressed in white in the winter and spring, towering over residents’ homes.
To the South, the green and fertile Hula Valley is seen.
In the North and West one looks on the beautiful fields and orchards of Metulla’s residents, changing colours and configuration in accordance with the season.
Metulla’s fruits – apples, pears, apricots, cherries, plums, peaches and nectarines - are well known in Israel and around the world for their exquisite taste.
High Lebanese mountains, that are also snow bound during winter, look down on us from the North. East of Metulla there are four waterfalls: the Ayun, the Tachana (“Flour Mill Falls” - near the wheat threshing floor), the Eshed ("Cascade") and the Tannur (“Oven”).
The Ayun stream flows from the Ayun valley in Lebanon.
(It is pronounced "eye YUN" and written as Ijon in the Bible.)
The stream has carved out a small vegetated canyon, on the East side of Metulla, as it flows down from the valley, on its way to the Jorden River and the Sea of Galilee.
A walk in the nature reserve of the Ayun canyon is very pleasant.
As one follows the footpaths, nature offers wonderful sights to enjoy: beautiful landscape, blossoming flowers, waterfalls, and the experience of strolling through an enchanted world. In the direction of Har Hazfiya ("The Look-out Mountain"), on the west side of the town, there is an observation point – the Dado lookout. From there you can see the entire Hula valley, as well as Mt. Hermon, the mountains of the Upper Galilee region (Naftali), the Golan Heights and the Lebanon – a fascinating view.
Various points of attraction are in the center of Metulla, including: the community center, the House of Art, and the Farmers Museum ("Beit Ha ikar").
At the museum, one can learn about the history and the very first days of the settlement.
Metulla also prides a large public library near the centre of town, as well as the Canada Centre.
Canada Centre
The Canada Centre, one of the main attractions to Metulla, is in the heart of the community with a commanding view of the Galilee. It is one of Israel's major tourist attractions, and the largest sports centre in this part of the world, providing high quality sports and leisure activities. Facilities include a wide variety of sports and recreational activities:
An olympic size ice skating rink,
A smaller, secondary, ice skating rink,
An indoor swimming pool,
An outdoor swimming pool,
A Bowling alley,
A Basketball auditorium,
Squash courts,
A rifle range,
Fitness rooms,
A professional health and message centre,
Four restaurants,
A full size soccer field, and coming soon,
Tennis courts.
The Russians complete a cycle in Metulla:
A hundred years ago, Russian immigrants founded and built Metulla.
Today Russian and Ukranian immigrants have become top Olympic figure skaters and World Class speed skaters at the Canada Centre in Metulla.
Ice skating is becoming a popular sport in Israel. Skates are provided as part of the admission to the centre.
As well, the visitor can take a lesson from one of the experienced professional trainers. Ice shows, of international standards, are often given.
The heated indoor pool has a water slide and includes two two jacuzzis and an infant pool.
The outdoor pool, open in the summer months, also has a water slide and infant pool. The Centre also has a wide choice of eateries. A health centre is run by professional staff and provides spa facilities, including wet and dry saunas and a private jaccuzzi.
The Centre also incorporates a rifle range and gun shop, a sports clothing shop and small gift shop.
The newest attraction is a modern 10-lane bowling alley.
In Metulla you will find hotels, large and small, as well as guest houses, with beautiful rooms to let, and specialized restaurants. Other attractions, too numerous to mention, are found in this little town. The people of Metulla devote a great deal of love to rural hospitality, with the same dedication and determination as their ancestors who founded and built the town. This is apparent in every guesthouse and hotel. Their dedication and care is seen in every corner.

Throughout the year a number of special events and festivals take place in Metulla. We invite you to join us by fitting them into your vacation schedule.
We look forward to seeing you in Metulla. On behalf of the residents of Metulla, I extend my best wishes to you for a pleasant vacation.
